Hours after apologising to Express photographer Albin Mathew, IIT-M director Bhaskar Ramamurthi sought to turn the tables against the victim of violence.
The first statement from Ramamurthi on Wednesday evening said: “There are media reports that a press photographer was assaulted by a senior faculty member in IIT Madras campus on 21 Aug. IIT-M regrets this unfortunate incident and apologizes to the concerned photo-journalist and the media at large. We hope to enjoy cordial relationships with the media as in the past.”
Subsequently, in a letter to all editors, the Madras Reporters Guild and the Press Council of India, he said, “IIT-M would like to lodge a complaint against the unethical behaviour of the photo-journalist concerned.” The statement alleged that the “photographer abused the CCW (Chairman Council of Warden) and punched him a couple of times. With no avenue left, CCW reacted leading to an unfortunate altercation.” Ramamurthi said: “This statement is signed by faculty members and students who were present during the incident.”
