Cracking nuts with a sledgehammer comes naturally to villagers, no special training is required. Did you know that shelling chali betel nuts is one of the main wage-earning jobs in many areas. The task of cracking the nuts is not just work, but also a competition. There is a chali nut shelling competition held in Swarnavalli, North Karnataka. This is celebrated every year in May at Swarnavalli Maha Sansthan. People from several villages gather on this day to participate. Competitions such as the chali shelling and the coconut shelling competition are organised to introduce attendees to agricultural work. Around 40 girls participated in this year’s competition. Four groups were formed for the chali nut shelling competition. The shelled nuts are used for various purposes within Maths and Temples. Remarkably, each participant managed to shell 80, 100, or even 120 nuts in just five minutes.
What stood out was that both young girls and older individuals took part in this competition. Family members cheered on the participants, making the daily farm work enjoyable. All participants received a certificate, though there was no prize. The main aim of this competition was to familiarise people with agricultural work.
Similarly, a man named Naveen Kumar, a 27-year-old martial artist from India has set the world record for the most walnuts cracked with his head in one minute. By cracking an impressive 273 walnuts, Kumar has beaten the previous record of 254 walnuts held by Muhammad Rashid. Rashid was the first to hold the record in 2014 by cracking an impressive 150 walnuts. He then surpassed his own record in 2016 by cracking a whopping 181 nuts.
In 2017, Kumar, who had been trained by the renowned Prabhakar Reddy (himself a holder of several martial arts records), dethroned Rashid with his own stunning feat by cracking an incredible 217 walnuts. Although both managed to beat the previous record on the set of La Notte dei Record in Italy, Rashid ultimately emerged victorious, cracking an astonishing 254 walnuts to Kumar’s 239.
