A farmer named Saravanakumar earns up to Rs 50,000 per month by cultivating jasmine plants from DSK Nursery in Thangachimadam and Akkalmadam in Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu for three generations. He also exports them to other districts of Tamil Nadu and abroad like Malaysia.
Talking about the cultivation of jasmine plants, he said, “We have been producing jasmine flowers for three generations and we are passing this business on to the next generation after understanding it. This year we have grown two hectares of plants. Since we have been in this business for three generations, there are many customers. We sell to them and also export to various other places”.
He also shared that one plant is sold at Rs 4 and 100 plants in a bed are sold at Rs 400. If one grows at least 25 cents, one can earn an income of Rs 50,000. In the rainy season, the plants sell better. In summer, they are sold less. So, the monthly income cannot be specified exactly. “Also, the maintenance effort is too high in summer. Too much heat dries out the plants, hence water is needed daily to prevent the plants from drying out. Apart from growing and exporting the plants, a profit of up to Rs 10,000 can be earned by selling the flowers locally,” the farmer added.
“We have also exported to Malaysia. We also send them by courier and bus to the farmers who come from different parts of the country,” Sarvanakumar added. He further shared about the methods of growing the crops and the fertilisers needed for it.
Another farmer who took over his mother’s jasmine (kutimulla) cultivation for ten cents has now become a wholesaler of jasmine. The flower cultivation is spread over two and a half acres. He earns a monthly income of Rs 1 lakh.
Sooraj, a native of Koratty, gave up his job as a technician in Gujarat’s shipyard ten years ago and started flower cultivation. The 31-year-old now spends 12 hours a day in his garden. He goes to his garden at 5 am with his mother, wife and younger brother to pluck the flowers. It takes three and a half hours to finish. After that, he will be in a hurry to supply jasmine flowers for weddings and festivals.
