BHUBANESWAR: There should be more aggressive publication of translations of Oriya literature in order to make the rich culture and literary heritage of the State available to the larger sections. Visitors to the State attending functions and conferences should be gifted with translated works as mementos to popularise Oriya literature, said Justice BP Das of the Orissa High Court on Tuesday. Releasing the book “Platinum Jubilee of Orissa Politics,” written by senior journalist Basant Das, Justice Das observed that readership of Oriya language was declining fast while English readers are growing in number. Translations in English would ignite interest among the Oriyas who prefer English to read the original work in their own language, he opined. The book chronicles Orissa politics and political events that shaped the State from the 1936 to the present 2011. The flash-point, in fact, was a controversy regarding the first Prime Minister of Orissa. A leading newspaper had mentioned the first PM as Biswanath Das which was contested by a scholar. “After careful study and analysis of historical documents, it was found that Gajapati Maharaja of Parlakhemundi Shri Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deb was the first PM from April 1, 1937 to July 19, 1937. The book tries to present correct facts on Orissa politics, describe different phases, rise and fall of governments, personalities, stalwarts in a most objective manner,” Das said.Among others Sambad Editor Soumyaranjan Patnaik, Samaya Editor Satkadi Hota, Khabar Editor Prof Biswaranjan, Germany-based engineer Rajendra Narayan Das and engineer Ajit Mohapatra spoke.
