Melbourne: Amidst high drama, India were elevated to the silver medal in the women's 4x400m relay at the XVIII Commonwealth Games when the original winners England were disqualified.
The quartet of Rajwinder Kaur, Chitra Soman, Manjit Kaur and Pinki Parmanik, who came home in 3:29.57 seconds, had initially finished third but profited after the English team of Kimberly Wall, Nicola Sanders, Natasha Danvers and Christine Ohuruogu was thrown out for lane crossing.
The Australian team of Jana Pittman, Caitlin Willis, Tamsyn Lewis and Rosemary Hayward claimed the gold while the Nigerian foursome of Kudirat Akhigbe, Joy Eze, Folashade Abugan and Christina Ekpukhon, who had initially finished fourth in 3:31.83 seconds, were promoted to the bronze medal.
England had themselves profited from a slip-up by the then runaway leaders Jamaica, when they dropped the baton on the second exchange between Novlene Williams and Shellene Williams.
Jamaica finished fourth in the end.
