New Delhi: Indian shooters showed promise in the medal hunt at the upcoming Commonwealth Games with Gagan Narang and Tejaswini Sawant grabbing top places in the men's and women's air rifle shooting events in the Badge matches started at Melbourne on Saturday.

Narang shot 596 out of 600 to emerge the winner while his compatriot Abhinav Bindra with 595 mark finished second in the pre-event competition which will also decide the shooters' rankings for the main event to be held after the Games are declared open on March 15, according to information received from the National Rifle Association of India.

Tejaswini Sawant fired a superb 399/400 to claim the honours in the women's event while another Indian Avneet Kaur Sidhu was third with the score of 398.

Samaresh Jang, who had won three gold medals in the last month's Australian Cup at the same venue, was second after returning with 555 points in the free pistol event. Vivek Singh (543) was fourth.

Sushma Rana fired 574 for a third place and Saroja Kumari was 564 to be a distant sixth with 564 points.

The Badge matches will continue till March 14.
