Israeli Indians to rediscover roots
Israeli Indian youth are awestruck by the beauty of their culture and want to attend Diaspora programmes to connect to their roots.

Tel Aviv: An Israeli beauty queen of Indian Origin will participate in the internship programme for Diaspora youth in India as part of the fourth 'Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas' celebrations.

Rinat Dokerker, the second runner up at the Miss Israel beauty contest this year, said, "My Indianness gives me a distinct identity and this programme will enable me to connect to my roots."

Rinat, who aspires to break into the Indian modelling scene some day, said, "When I go to take part in the Miss Europe contest, I won't just be representing Israel but also the vast Indian community in the country."

Rinat will join a group of eight youngsters for a sponsored three weeks internship programme in India.

The group will be taken on a tourism and exposure trip to Karnataka to familiarise them with diverse aspects like art, culture, business, IT and Science and Technology.

From Karnataka they will proceed to Hyderabad where they will intern with organisations, institutes and corporate houses for a week.

They will then be attached to the Centre for the Study of the Indian Diaspora at the University of Hyderabad before participating at the Pravasi Diwas celebrations between January 6 and 9.

Since Israel is home to nearly 70,000 Jews of Indian origin, Rinat?s statements have gone down well with the masses.

Similar sentiments have been put forth by other youngsters of Indian origin who expressed interest in promoting India through various youth movements in Israel in an effort to feel closer to their country of origin.

A young leader of the Indian community, Yonatan Dekel, who has been closely working with the Labour party leaders, wants to initiate programmes to strengthen the connection between Israeli youth and their country of origin.

Dekel who belongs to the Cochin community says that he is awestruck by the beauty of the culture that he belongs to and that he feels proud to be an Indian.
