KOZHIKODE: Stating that the party has no interest in carrying on needless controversy, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) state general secretary E T Muhammed Basheer said that a new person would be fixed for the post of Vice-Chancellor in the Calicut University as per norms. He was speaking to reporters after the party secretariat meeting here on Sunday.Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb also attended. However, the party general secretary evaded questions regarding how the name of an unqualified person was suggested by the party for the post.“Like many other parties, IUML does not follow the system of recommending nominees to key posts. This is purely an academic matter.“According to the norms, the state government would fix a qualified person recommended by the search committee. The party secretariat has asked the education minister and parliamentary party leader to stick on to this stand considering the interests of the society at large.“The whole controversy regarding the nomination of Abdul Hameed ends here,” Muhammed Basheer said.Dismissing media reports that the chief minister had rejected the recommendation of IUML, Basheer said, “The file regarding the appointment of vice-chancellor had not reached the chief minister.Even the search committee meeting was postponed.Besides, there is no dispute within the party regarding this issue.” Asked whether the party suffered a failure by recommending an incompetent person to the post, Basheer said, “The party is least interested in carrying on this controversy. We understand that there exist certain legal problems in appointing Hameed in the post and we have no persistence over it.Hence, there is no point in doing a post mortem.” Basheer said that the demand for a fifth ministerial post was still live though it did not come up in the party secretariat meeting. He added the secretariat has decided to focus more on relief activities in the coastal regions considering the misery of the people due to heavy rains. The meeting also expressed satisfaction over the functioning of the UDF government and the performance of MLAs from the party. It also decided to give responsibilities to each members to bring in more professionalism in the functioning of the party.IUML state president Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal, Parliamentary Party leader and Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty, general secretary K P A Majeed, Abdusamad Samadani MLA, M C Mayin Haji, Cherkkalam Abdulla, T A Ahamed Kabeer, Kutty Ahamed Kutty, P K K Bava, P M A Salam and M I Thangal also attended.
