Actor Ravi Baswani passed away today following a massive heart attack. He was 64. Known for his perfect comic timing, Baswani has been part of some cult movies like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Chashme Buddoor. Even though he was mostly offered character roles, Baswani always left his own individual stamp on each of the roles that he portrayed.
A well-known stage actor to start with, Baswani’s debut film was Chashme Buddoor in 1981. This comedy film, directed by Sai Paranjpe, had him playing the role of one of the three friends who fall for the same neighbourhood girl. It was the cult film Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, where he played a professional photographer, that got him more accolades and even a Filmfare award for the best comedian in 1984.
Anupam Kher, who has been a close friend for over three decades, said that Ravi Baswani was a very happy person. “Our association goes back to Chandigarh days, even before we started working in the Hindi film industry. We would act together in plays in Delhi. He was a happy and generous person. Wonderful and gypsy like. Its sad that he left us so soon...” Kher said.
Apart from many friends in the industry, Baswani has been very close to his Jaane Bhi Do... co-star Naseeruddin Shah. Baswani was a part of Naseer’s directorial debut, Yun Hota to Kya Hota. Baswani also played important roles in films like Bunty Aur Babli, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Pyar Tune Kya Kiya etc.
May he continue to spread laughter in heaven.
