India is currently embroiled in the tragic train collision that involved a passenger train Kanchanjunga Express and a goods train near Rangapani station, 30 km from New Jalpaiguri station. Ten people are reported to be dead while over 40 passengers have been severely injured in the railway collision on June 17.
The initial probe into the Kanchanjunga Express accident has suggested that there were lapses by the operation department of the New Jalpaiguri Rail Division. While many couldn’t escape the clutches of this unfortunate collision others got lucky. A family of Nabadwip who were onboard the Kanchanjunga Express shared their experience of the horrific collision.
Alok Debnath and Pampi Shah talked to Local18 and recounted the horrors of the Kanchanjunga Express collision. They were returning from Agartala to Nabadwip. They also had their child along with them. The family was boarded in the S5 coach. Pampi Shah said that the train was standing near Siliguri on Monday morning when she decided to go washroom. She was in the washroom when a sudden hit came from the coaches beside her. She slipped and hurt her leg. Whereas, her child who was sitting on the seat fell and hurt his head. There were no serious injuries, Pampi Shah added. After the collision, the family took the Balurghat Express train from Malda town on Monday afternoon to reach Nabadwip Dham station.
Parul Debnath councillor of Ward No. 24, met the family who came back from the face of death despite being under the grip of an unfortunate accident. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the collision spot after the news broke out. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee also visited the accident site. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an enhanced ex-gratia compensation to the victims of Rs 10 lakh in case of death, Rs 2.5 Lakh towards grievous and ₹50,000 for minor injuries.
