BANGALORE: The Bangalore Tamil Sangam has come up with an initiative of translating famous Kannada works into Tamil and vice versa. Tamil Sangam has been funded with Rs 30 lakh from the Central Institute of Classical Tamil in four instalments to complete the project of translating Sangam Literature ie, Ettuthogai and Pathupattu into Kannada.Bangalore Tamil Sangam president Meenakshi Sundaram said, “We have already spoken to Prof Siddalingaiah of Kannada Book Authority and Manu Baligar from the Department of Kannada and Culture. They will be giving us the list of books to be translated into Tamil. We will make a proposal accordingly and will meet Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda this month. Once we get the grants, a team of translators will be constituted and we will go works towards completion of the project”.Kannada Book Authority President Prof Siddalingaiah said, “Tamil Sangam is doing good work by translating Kannada works into Tamil. I will be referring them to translate Vachanas of Shiva Sharanara and Sarvajna, Dasara Kirthane with some selected books penned by Jnanpith awardees”. “Ettuthogai consists of 2,351 poems, Pathupattu has 3,552 poems and the Sangam Literature in total has 33,500 lines which speaks about various things like heroism, different stages of love, family and the behaviour of people in a society between 3rd century BC and 3rd century AD,” said G Damodaran, secretary, Bangalore Tamil Sangam.
