KARAIKAL: The government-run Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Institute of Engineering and Technology (PKIET) at Karaikal has proposed to offer an undergraduate programme in marine engineering this year in association with the Marg Karaikal port. Karaikal MLA AMH Nazeem has urged the Pondy government to expedite the process and announce the fee structure for the course.Last year, Nazeem had appealed to the government to start a marine engineering course at PKIET. The Congress government at Puducherry accepted his appeal and announced that the course would be started during the academic year 2011-12.As the laboratory facilities for the course required an investment of Rs 12 crore, the government sought the help of Marg Karaikal Port. The port authorities agreed to help PKIET in conducting the course utilising its equipment and facilities. In return, the government has agreed to allot a specific share from the fee collected from the students to Karaikal port. The government has not announced the fee structure yet. Nazeem told Express that the Maritime Academy in Chennai was collecting Rs 2.20 lakh per annum from the students for BTech marine engineering course.“Pondy government should immediately announce the fee structure at PKIET. In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding has to be signed between the Pondy government and the Director General of Shipping as a mandatory requirement to offer the course. All these things should be expedited to commence the course without any delay,” said Nazeem.PKIET has announced that 60 students will be admitted to the first year BTech programme in marine engineering this year.
