New Delhi: The Karnataka government has lifted Value Added Tax on wine, beer and hard liquor. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who also holds the Finance portfolio, announced that measure in his budget speech in the Vidhan Soudha on Wednesday.

Karnataka is also starting a government subsidized chain of food centres similar to the ones in Tamil Nadu. Called the ‘Namma Canteen’ and modeled on Jayalalithaa’s ‘Amma Canteen’, it will sell breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch for Rs 10.

Agriculture in the state has been allocated Rs 5080 crore while the Anna Bhagya scheme will witness an increase in food grain distribution to 7 kg per person from the current 5 kg.

The total expenditure in the budget amounts to around Rs 1.86 lakh crore.
