NALGONDA: Is the notorious khap panchayat culture as rampant in the State as it is in Haryana? It seems so. A day after a woman was ex-communicated for seeking alimony from her divorced husband at Bheemili in Visakhapatnam, a young man reportedly committed suicide after being ostracised at a village in Nalgonda district on Sunday.Shaik Sayyed (28), a daily-wage worker, was found hanging from a tree in the fields outside Motkuru in Nalgonda district this morning. His widow Gore Bi lodged a complaint with the police, stating that Sayeed had ended his life following the family’s humiliation in the village.Going into the details, Gore Bi, a farm hand, had an argument with a fellow worker on Friday and the latter took the matter to the notice of the village elders. She had complained that she was insulted by Gore Bi and demanded justice. The village elders, including Gore Mia and Razz Mohammad, summoned Gore Bi Saturday morning but she did not turn up. Upon receiving the summons a second time, she went along with her husband and presented her side of the story but during the hearing, she picked up an argument with the village elders. Taking a serious view of Gore Bi’s “audacity” in questioning them, the village elders imposed a “social boycott” on the family — in other words, the villagers were directed neither to speak nor visit Gore Bi or any member of her family. The couple went home and were figuring out their next move when their seven-year-old daughter, who went to a neighbour’s house to watch TV, returned dejected. They had shut the door on her face. Later, the girl was again humiliated when she went to fetch water from a public tap. The last straw, though, was the treatment meted out to Sayyed at the local toddy compound. A disturbed Sayyed returned home and gave a tougue-lashing to his wife and left the house in a huff. His body was found this morning.
