A 10-year old boy is battling for life with 60 percent burn injuries at the Government Rajaji Hospital here after he “playfully” doused kerosene over his body and set fire to himself two days ago.
Family members suspect that the class IV boy Sakthivel could have been taken in by frame-by-frame television images of an auto rickshaw driver committing immolation against an eviction drive in Sivakasi on Saturday last.
Police said that the boy had poured kerosene over his body and set fire to himself on Tuesday morning when his mother had stepped outside.
Hearing his screams, people in the vicinity rushed to his house, doused the fire and took him to a private hospital in Madurai.
The Melur police have registered a case and investigations are on.
