KOCHI: Kitco, a public sector consultancy organisation, is all set to achieve the potential to renovate golf courses in the Gulf region. With the successful completion of Ghala Wentworth Golf Course in Muscat it began to receive more offers from the region. The Ghala Golf Course was re-designed and re-built by Kitco and handed over to the Oman government in December.Kitco is now holding discussions with the authorities in Oman for the construction of a golf course in Sohar, a city located about 200 kms north of Muscat. “More golf course projects in Gulf countries are in the pipeline,” Kitco managing director Cyriac Davies said. Ghala Golf Course, built in 1971, is a ‘brown course’ (called so because of the predominant sand content). Kitco was entrusted with the task of redesigning, landscaping and upgrading it. “Most of the existing golf courses in the Gulf region are brown courses. Many Gulf countries have plans to upgrade golf courses. Golf as a sport has become more popular in Gulf countries during the past few years and more people have started playing golf there. Another favourable factor for Kitco is that the number of organisations providing this type of service is very few in the region,” Davies said. Kitco was the consultant of the golf course that was built at Nedumbassery near the Kochi international airport, which is the first golf course in India to be conceived and built by an Indian company.
