Less than a year after Malwani tragedy, hooch still widely available in Maharashtra
Ten months after the tragic Malwani hooch tragedy, the Maharashtra government has failed to take action against mushrooming country liquor dens.

Mumbai: Another hooch tragedy could be waiting to happen in Maharashtra where at least 106 people lost their lives in June 2015 after drinking spurious liquor in Malwani, a CNN-IBN investigation has revealed.

The investigation showed how, even after the tragedy, the state government has failed to take action against mushrooming country liquor - popularly known as 'Phuga' – dens.

Phuga is a pouch of cheap illicit liquor. It costs Rs 20 a pouch and cheaper than the country liquor. The main customers are daily wage labourers.

In June 2015, the Maharashtra government - after being rattled by the tragedy - ordered a probe into the deaths caused by the killer brew at the Laxmi Nagar slum in Malwani.

However, over the months – to be more precise only after 10 months – number of country liquor dens has increased in Mumbai’s suburbs.

Ground reality checks at Alibaug, Teh village beside other nearby suburban areas in Mumbai, showed hooch was available as usual and that vendors were fearlessly involved in the business in connivance with the administration.
