The Lt Governor ordered the removal of Rahul Mehra as the Delhi Police counsel.

New Delhi: Just ahead of the bail plea hearing of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar, Delhi L-G Najeeb Jung ordered the removal of the counsel of Delhi Police.

The Lt Governor ordered the removal of Rahul Mehra as the Delhi Police counsel.

According to the letter sent by L-G's office, accessed by CNN-IBN, it appointed four lawyers as new counsel for Delhi Police.

The new counsels appointed for the Delhi Police are Tushar Mehta, Sanjay Jain, Shailendra Babbar and Anil Soni.

Reacting to the development, Delhi government sources told CNN-IBN that the order to remove counsel coming just ahead of Kanhaiya Kumar's bail hearing smacked of political vendetta.

There were also reports of tiff between Rahul Mehra and new counsel Tushar Mehta.

A defiant Rahul Mehra, meanwhile, told CNN-IBN, "Yes I have been removed as a Delhi Police lawyer in JNU sedition case. I will go to the court as standing counsel of Delhi government."

The Delhi Police had written a letter saying they want Anil Soni to represent them in High Court, to which the L-G office gave its consent.

Delhi Police has faced widespread criticism for the handling of the situation after Kanhaiya Kumar was allegedly beaten up by lawyers inside Patiala House Court when he was produced for hearing.
