PUDUCHERRY: The Congress state unit requested Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh to intervene and bring law and order under control in the Union Territory as the NR Congress government had failed to do so. Leader of Opposition V Vaithilingam and PCC president A V Subramanian along with other state functionaries submitted a memorandum to the LG on Sunday.Talking to the media, Vaithilingam said in the wake of the stabbing incident when some rowdies stabbed spare parts shop owner Thangamni because he refused to give “mamool’, the LG should convene a meeting with CM, cabinet ministers and police officials immediately. He also demanded for a special Assembly session to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation, violence in Yanam, increase in VAT rates and Thane relief.In the memorandum, Vaithilingam and A V Subrmanian said, “Ever since the present NR Congress Government came to power, the law and order situation is getting worse by the day. Armed with weapons rowdy groups attack shop owners in their shop premises itself and demand mamool.”They alleged that convicted and accused ring leaders were given directions from jail to extract money and also make threatening phone calls. Two such incidents have taken place this week, they pointed out and said, the injured traders were being treated in Chennai. “Traders and their associations have made representations, conducted shop closures, agitation etc but there has been no result,” they said. The Congress leaders said the “people feel insecure and are in a state of panic.”Vaithilingam said the Chief Minister was ‘silent’ on various issues confronting the state. Asked whether the Centre’s intervention would be sought, Vaithilingam said, “There is an elected government whose duty is to ensure law and order. Let them say we cannot manage then we’ll approach the Centre.”
