The peak stands at a height of about 1100 metres and is also a popular tourist spot.

One of the tallest peaks in the Ponmudi mountain range (the Western Ghats) in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram is Varayadumotta. Its name is derived from Nilgiri tahr or Varayadu. It is also known as Varayadumudi and Varayattumutti. It is an isolated place with some of the most spectacular views. This place is also a favourable habitat for mountain goats (Nilgiri Tahr). Varayadumotta stands at a height of about 1100 metres and is also a popular tourist spot. Due to the elevation, there is a formation of peculiar shapes on the hills that make this peak one of the most unique ones in the world. It is a protected mountain range located between Ponmudi Hills, Palode Hills and Kallar Valley. It has 12 peaks; the second peak is the highest one, Varayadumotta. It is ranked as the third most adventurous trekking place in South India, right after Meesapulimala and Agastyarkoodam.

A few of the most famous tourist destinations near the peak are Kallar River, Meenmutty waterfalls, Manakayam waterfalls and Braemore estate. These fall under the jurisdiction of the Palode Forest Department and hence, group trekking trips are easily organised from the ecotourism office in Ponmudi at a fee. If you are willing to go on a trek, for your safety, a forest guard will also be accompanying the team. The trek includes climbing and getting down the steep slopes of the hills with a steep fall into the Kallar valley. The trek lasts for at least 12 hours and offers one of the most memorable experiences. Apart from this, there is another trekking route that starts in Ponmudi and Mankayam.

The adventurous trek is 18 kilometres just one way. One has to climb and navigate through narrow and slippery paths, and dangerous and deep gorges as well. The view makes up for all the sweat and exertion. You will be met with stunning views of the hills covered in mist, the valleys, the sky and tranquillity.

The peak is located just 40 kilometres away from Kerala’s capital city. Despite getting the name because of the Nilgiri Tahrs, these goats rarely make an appearance in front of visitors. If you are planning a trip, make sure to bookmark this place and opt for the trek.
