KOCHI: According to the figures available with the State Crime Records Bureau, 77 missing cases were registered in Ernakulam in 2011. And the officials concerned are clueless as to whether these people were kidnapped by human traffickers or not. Of the 77 missing people, 31 were women and 46 men.There was also a steep increase in the number of unmarried women who went missing with 18 cases being reported in this regard.Of this, nine people were under the age of 18.Of the 46 men who went missing, 14 were unmarried and eight were teenagers.As many as 10 elderly men went missing and the same number of old women went missing from the district.The police could trace 36 of the 77 missing people and there is no information yet about the remaining.According to the police, many girls elope from their homes following love affairs or after being tortured by the family members.“The majority of girls we traced fled their homes after falling in love with someone.Some return after getting married.Many girls ran away after facing severe torture from parents.Some of the elderly left home after their children failed to take care of them.Many were later found in some old-age homes in other cities,” police official said.Most men flee home to avoid paying debt while teenagers run away to avoid studies.“Many boys ran away from home after facing severe pressure from home and school.A boy, whom we could locate from another state, was not willing to come home as he was brutally beaten up for not performing well in studies,” they said.According to Murughan S, secretary of Theruvora Pravarthaka Samiti, most children face severe stress.“When they are deprived of love, they run away,” he said.
