Lusofonia Games: India claim 3 gold medals in table tennis
India won six out of seven gold medals on offer in the table tennis competition.

Panaji: Indian paddlers did the country proud as they claimed three more gold medals to finish with six out of seven on offer in the 3rd edition of Lusofonia Games at Peddem ground in Mapusa.

With this, India, who put up their best performance so far, took their total medals tally to eight gold, two silver and three bronze.

Portugal were no match to India as their only gold came in men's doubles final, taking their overall tally to one gold, four silver and a bronze.

In the mixed double finals, Soumyajit Ghosh and Ankita Das won gold, beating Portugal's Diogo Silva and Joana Mota 11-8, 11-6, and 11-9.

Soumyajit and Ankita beat India's Harmeet Desai and Shamini Kumarasena in the semi-finals where they started well by winning the first two sets convincingly 11-6, 11-6 before they met a stiff challenge in the third set.

However, Soumyajit finished the game with a back forehand drive to win the match 11-6, 11-6, 11-10.

Earlier, Harmeet Desai and Kumarasena Shimini won bronze in the mixed doubles when they beat Portugal's Andre Silva and Micial Patricia 11-6, 11-6, 11-10.

The Indian women, who made a clean sweep on Wednesday in the singles event, went on to win the doubles finals when Shamini and Madhurika Patkar beat Portugal's Marta Santos and Joana Mota 11-5, 11-6, 11-6.

Portugal pair of Raquel and Patricia had to sweat it out to beat Sri Lankan duo of Ishara and Nuwani 11-4, 9-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6 to win the bronze medal.

Portugal, who dominated the table tennis event in the two editions of the games, had to bite the dust on Thursday when they lost the finals against India in mixed doubles and women's doubles.

In the men's single, Portugal's Andre Silva beat his team-mate Diago Silva 11-7, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10 to clinch bronze.

In the concluding match, Harmeet Desai beat Soumyajit Ghosh 11-8, 11-2, 11-7, 11-8 with India finishing with a rich haul of six gold out of the seven medals, their best performance in the Lusofonia Games.
