KOCHI: Make A Difference (MAD) has won the World Summit Youth Award (WSYA). MAD is a youth volunteer network working with the underprivileged children living in orphanages, street shelters and poor homes.MAD, along with its education partner Cambridge University Press, tries to empower these children with English. It is one of the 18 winners chosen from over 700 entries from 99 countries.The WSYA selects and promotes best practice in e-content. It demonstrates the potential of young people to create outstanding digital content and serves as a platformfor people from all UN member states to work together to reduce poverty and hunger, and to tackle ill-health, gender inequality, lack of education, lack of access to clean water and environmental degradation.A special panel of 20 young leaders from 17 countries evaluated the entries. The 18 winners and 15 runners-up will be honoured in Graz, Austria, between November 10 and 13. Jithin Krishnan, Public Relations head of Make A Difference, will representMAD at the event. Representatives from governments, NGOs, private businesses and the United Nations will be present. WSYA is a project of the World Summit Award network and is organised by the International Center for New Media (ICNM) as part of its activities within the United Nations Global Alliance for ICT and Development. The WSYA is organised as a follow-up activity by the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) and its action plan for 2015. MAD volunteers teach around 3,500 children in Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kochi, Coimbatore, Delhi, Gwalior, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram, Vellore, Vijayawada and Vishakapatnam. MAD also runs a placement project focusing on the career-specific as well as the general exposure.
