MADURAI: For Kannan, a sexagenarian from Alanganallur, life turned miserable when his wards started ignoring him after he gave away all the properties to them. Kannan who came to the weekly grievances redressal day meet at the Collectorate presented a petition praying the Collector’s intervention for better livelihood.Moved by the request of the sexagenarian, Collector U Sagayam asked Kannan whether his wards can be booked under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. The Collector informed Kannan that he had been the first Collector to invoke the provisions of the Act while he was posted at Namakkal. The senior citizen requested the Collector not to arrest his sons and pressed the Collector to reprimand them. The Collector spoke on the phone with one of Kannan’s sons and summoned him. The son who was working in the pharma marketing industry met the Collector.Sagayam asked the man’s reasons for subjecting his father to such inhuman treatment. The man assured that he would maintain his father from here on.The Collector suggested Kannan’s son to give some money to take care of his father’s expenses right away. The man informed the Collector that he would have to arrange for money. The Collector said that the elderly man would stay here until the money was arranged for and offered a seat to the elder on the dais. When the man came with the money, the Collector suggested him to give it to his father in front of everyone and instructed him to ferry his father back to his home.    Thanking the Collector, the sexagenarian left from the grievances hall along with his son.
