BHUBANESWAR: The Crime Branch, looking for definite leads into the killing of Umerkote MLA Jagabandhu Majhi and his personal security officer Pinku Patro, on Monday released a sketch of one suspect. The sketch has been prepared on the basis of eyewitness accounts and descriptions. The wheelchair-bound BJD legislator was distributing land pattas in Gona village under Raighar block of Nabarangpur district on September 24 when the assailants struck. Three bike-borne youths shot at Majhi and his PSO from point blank range. As both dropped on the spot, the assailants shouted pro-Maoist slogans and sped away. While the PSO died on the spot, Majhi’s driver rushed the legislator to Raighar hospital, but it was too late by then. It is being suspected that the killing has been carried out by Maoists even as the Crime Branch is probing all angles, including that of contract killers. Majhi, who had been involved in the strife between adivasis and Bangladeshi settlers by espousing the cause of the former, had earlier survived two attempts on his life. He was incapacitated in one attack and confined to a wheelchair. The Crime Branch has sought information from the public on the person depicted in the sketch. It has requested the public to share information with the CID CB on telephone number 0671-2304314.
