HYDERABAD: A person who tried to sell away his two-month-old daughter for Rs 5,000, reportedly to go back to his native place in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on Sunday. Another person who assisted the infant's father was also arrested. Police said that apart from poverty, the infant's father tried to 'harass' his wife by selling the child.According to police, 25-year Raheem and his wife Zeenat were married nearly one-and-half years back and they had a two-month baby Saba. The family migrated to the city a year back and were staying at Subash Nagar in Jeedimetla.Raheem is working as a private tutor of Urdu classes and also working at a construction site as a supervisor. Jeedimetla police said Raheem was finding it difficult to run the family and wanted to return to his native place. To meet the expenses of the journey, Raheem decided to sell his daughter and approached his friend Devanand for help to find a customer.According to police, on Sunday morning around 6 a.m., Raheem picked up the infant who was sleeping next to her mother and handed over the baby to Devanand who was waiting outside. They changed the girl's clothes and threw the old ones on the road to create the impression that the infant had been kidnapped.When Zeenat woke up and inquired about Saba, Raheem feigned ignorance and raised an alarm. Dundigal police nabbed Devanand after they were alerted by locals who saw him openly asking people if they wanted to buy the baby near Gandimaisamma market. Police took Devanand into custody and came to know of the truth when he confessed. Police later arrested Raheem also. "Raheem was in serious financial problems and wanted to harass his wife by selling the infant. We have registered a case under section 498-A (subjecting a married woman to cruelty) against him," Jeedimetla police inspector A Sanjeeva Rao said.
