Manali: Days after 25 people were washed away in a river surge in Manali, the Himachal Pradesh police have registered a case against Larji Dam authorities for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and causing death due to negligence. Search operations in Manali have entered day 4 on Wednesday.
However, chances of finding any survivors are dim, say officials. Just five bodies have been recovered while 19 students and one tour guide are still missing.
"We are continuing our search operations. We have deployed more teams. The current is not too strong today so we are hoping that search operations will be more successful," said ITBP official Ranjeet.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the engineering students who have lost their lives. An FIR has also been lodged against dam officials for negligence.
The parents of the students, meanwhile, have slammed college authorities for allowing students to go near the dam when they were on an industry visit. The parents are also contemplating filing a legal case against the college.
The victims were from the VNR college of engineering in Hyderabad. They had stopped to take photographs near the river when the surge in the Larji dam took place and 24 students were washed away.
