CUTTACK: Bajrakabati-Ranihat road buzzed with activity on Monday morning with Cuttack Police and Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) bringing in bulldozers to pull down a part of a shopping mall and many small shops. The illegal encroachments were cleared in the presence of officials of the CMC and Police Commissioner Bijay Kumar Sharma.A massive anti-encroachment drive has been launched in the city following a Orissa High Court directive to ensure smooth flow of traffic at busy thoroughfares. ACP (Traffic) Krushna Samal said that in a meeting chaired by Sharma on June 3, it was decided to clear roadblocks on the busy Ranihaat, Buxi Bazaar to Choudhury Bazar and other prominent places including Badambadi. The bulldozers were earlier on the rampage at Badambadi, Bajrakabati, Buxi Bazaar and Choudhury Bazaar on June 8, 9 and 10. The eviction drive has so far been peaceful. “Steps will also be taken to ensure that the evicted places are not re-encroached, which is possible through effective monitoring,” Samal added. Sources said the CMC is working out a plan to set up vending zones at strategic locations to rehabilitate the vendors whose shops would be demolished during the drive.
