The city police on Tuesday gave a final touch to its security cover as part of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s vist for the Emerging Kerala and other programmes. Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan was in the city to review the security cover prepared for the next two days. The Minister visited the places where the Prime Minister and other delegates will be attending.
He first visited Hotel Le Meridien, the venue for Emerging Kerala programme, and Marine Drive where Kochi Metro Rail Project will be unveiled.
About 1000 police personnel from other districts of the state arrived in the city to man the security and traffic system. About 100 Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) officials were also deployed.
Mock drill
The mock drill was conducted at the Naval Airbase where the Prime Minister will be arriving in his official aircraft. Similarly, a motorcade of the PM was also run on a test basis. It started from the Naval Base and moved to Hotel Le Meridien and then to Willingdon Island.
Besides there is Quick Reaction Team (QRT) ready for countering any threat.
The whole security system will be supervised by Kochi range Inspector-General K Padmakumar. The shadow police have been deployed at all parts of the state and Special Branch(intelligence) is monitoring the situation. The coastal police have been directed to intensify its patrolling activities as well. The dog squad and officials of bomb detection team are deployed.
About 50 surveillance cameras with special control room have been arranged at Marine Drive and Le Meridien.
“The Navy will conduct aerial surveillance as well as patrolling using boats. Coastal police boats will watch the backwaters near Le Meridien.
30 persons of the commando unit of Kerala Police ‘Thunderbolt’ armed with sophisticated wepons have been deployed. The cars coming to the venue will be checked by the bomb detection squad. Besides, the special unit of the SPG will shield the Prime Minister. Units of the Fire and Rescue Services have been deployed at the venues” Assistant Commissioner Tommy Sebastian said. Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said the security system is intact. Traffic won’t be affected much, he said.
