Kolkata: A tiny village, Ramkrishnapur in South Durgapur (nearly 40 kilometres from Kolkata), is drawing people’s attention after the central government announced Padma award for freedom fighter Sudhansu Biswas on Thursday.

The nonagenarian runs a home – Sri Ramakrishna Sevashram – for destitute children and elderly citizen. Since morning, his well-wishers and media persons gathered at the ashram to have a glimpse of Sudhansu Biswas. Born in 1918, in undivided Bengal, Biswas was associated with the freedom struggle during his school days.

Speaking to News18, 99-years-old Sudhansu Biswas in his frail voice said, “Bhalo lagchhey (good to hear about the award). More than the award, service to the nation and to people was my objective.”

“I can’t hear properly nowadays due to my age. I wish everyone in this earth stay happy with peace,” he added.

In 1942, as a Member of the Anushilan Samiti, he was given the responsibility to carry out attacks on the British Administration. He was arrested several times but was released.

During his freedom struggle, he met several veteran leaders like Nripen Chakraborty, Bina Das, Amiya Mondal, Mahatma Gandhi, etc. He still had a regret of not meeting Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose despite several attempts.

In 1948, he became the follower of Swami Vivekananda. He left home for the Himalayas and lived as a saint for 14 years.

During 60s he built several schools and ashrams for the poor and involved in raising funds for social services. He was associated with Birlas and plastic industries and used to generate funds to serve the poor children.

In 1996, Sudhansu Biswas established nearly 18 free schools for the poor and downtrodden at remote places in Sundarbans.
