KOCHI: Should we attend the college and sign the register is the question haunting many teachers of the government colleges under the Mahatama Gandhi University. The confusion concerning the semester break in November is causing anxiety to the professors in four colleges in Ernakulam - Maharaja’s College, Government College and Government Sanskrit college in Tripunithura and Manimala Government College.According to the notification of MG University dated September 3, the Syndicate of the varsity made an ordinance regarding academic year, semesters, vacation and holidays. The ordinance states that the academic year begins on June 1 and ends on May 31. The duration of semesters 1,3 and 5 is from June to November and 2, 4 and 6 from December to May. The semester breaks are in November and May every year. It leaves no doubt about the vacation in these months. But the principals are not willing to go by the ordinance. “We have put it on the notice board for students,” said the principals. “We are waiting for the reply from the Department of Collegiate Education and the concurrence of Accountant General before declaring the vacation in November,” said Valsala Kumari, principal, Maharaja’s College. “It will create problems when there is inter-university transfer as the system has not been standardised in all universities in the tate. Teachers on probation and those retiring on March 31 are also apprehensive about the vacation in November,” Tripunithura Government College principal Margaret George said. “The concerned authorities should have to have looked into these facts before making hasty decisions. “All the teachers are signing the register,” she said. Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University Rajan Varughese said such confusion isbaseless and there is no legal ground for apprehension. The ordinance clearly states about the vacations and the aided colleges have no confusion regarding this. It is up to the principals to clear the confusion, he said. “The varsity ordinance clearly states that the vacation is in November and the principals can jolly well go by it, I am yet to get any order from the Directorate of Collegiate Education,” deputy director of Collegiate Education Vishwambharan H S said.
