CHENNAI: Anna University has decided to reopen classes for the third- and final-year students at the Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet, from Friday. For the second-year students, classes will begin on October 17. The decision was taken following a closed-door meeting between the vice chancellor and parents on Wednesday and Thursday at the college campus. The college was closed following a hunger strike by the students demanding action by the vice-chancellor against what they call “atrocities” by the dean. A day before the protest, four students were suspended for indulging in ragging.“There are about 720 students every year. We asked the parents to come for the meeting. Almost all the parents of students in second year and third year attended the meeting. About 550 parents of fourth year sat for the meeting on day one,” Vice-Chancellor Mannar Jawahar told the media.During the meeting, authorities detailed the events that transpired in the campus and the eventualities, which forced the administration to act tough on the second-year students. The students had invited first year students to their classroom and had allegedly ragged them. Following this, a complaint was lodged, based on which four students were suspended from hostel and 15 were fined.Parents were reportedly asked to give an oral assurance that the students would attend classes without fail from the day of reopening. “No written assurance was asked from the parents,” the vice-chancellor said. No discussions or inquiries seem to have been launched into the  complaints of students against their dean.
