MLAs should address public needs: Chandy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has urged MLAs to rise up to the expectations of the people. In his inaugural address at the orientation programme for MLAs at the Assembly complex here on Thursday, Chandy said that the public  nowadays expected more from their representatives than what they   expected 50 years ago.The people now wanted their MLAs to intervene in all issues affecting them.  The MLAs on their part should understand the problems faced by the public and attempt to solve them.Orientation classes like this would help MLAs to gain an idea on ways to deal with the problems of the people, he said. The three-day programme would have classes on the effective utilisation of question hour, Assembly procedures and the functions of the legislature, the executive and the judiciary.Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan presided over the inaugural function.  Speaker G Karthikeyan welcomed the gathering and Deputy Speaker N Sakthan proposed a vote of thanks.The Speaker will present an overview on the programme on the closing day on September 3.
