CHENNAI: Following the agreement signed between the Department of Posts and the Moneygram Payment Systems Inc, USA, Moneygram facility is now available to the public at 40 select post offices in the State. The pilot scheme was launched in 100 post offices in Punjab, Tamil Nadu and in Delhi Union Territory on September 29 by Union Minister Kapil Sibal at New Delhi. Of the 100 post offices, the facility is available in 40 offices in Tamil Nadu.Addressing a press conference here, Chief Post Master General of Tamil Nadu Circle Shanthi Nair said money could be sent from 190 countries through Moneygram facility. The facility cannot be used for sending money for buying property or for other commercial purposes. Money can be sent for the maintenance of the family and for tourists visiting India.The service would be extended to post offices not covered now in a phased manner, Shanthi Nair said and added that the service was being operated as per the guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India. In a single remittance, money equivalent to a maximum of $2,500 could be received and maximum of 12 transactions would be permitted in a calendar year for a single person. Payment above Rs 50,000 should be made by cheque.The person sending the money would be given an eight-digit code. The recipient could receive the money by providing this code and ID proof.
