Bhopal: Newly appointed Home Minister Bala Bachchan charts the road map to a safer Madhya Pradesh. Speaking to News18 on the inaugural day of Madhya Pradesh assembly in Bhopal, Bachchan assures a make over for the existing dismal law and order situation in the state.
The Minister accepted that the police is not as harsh as it should be with criminals. Reviewing law and order in the state with senior police officials, he asked for stringent measures while dealing with criminals. A fear of law must be established among them, he added.
In addition, Bachchan has also directed police officials to be supportive and empathetic towards the general public. "I reminded them of their constitutional duties of serving the public and ensuring law and order," said the minister.
On the urgent issue of women safety, Bachchan claimed he would make sure women police personnel are present to record and register crimes against women. 6,000 police personnel are being recruited for the same. He is also going to seek expert advice on fake complains in crimes against women so that no innocent is thrown in jail.
Over crowding in jails is another area Bachchan highlighted, saying that he is reviewing old proposals of building new jails, including the one in Indore. “Wherever the budget is an issue, we would make sure additional allocations is made,” said the minister. Jails in MP presently have the capacity of 29,000 prisoners, while they house 43,000 inmates.
Treading cautiously the minister, however, clarified he hasn’t announced re-probe into SIMI jailbreak as reports claimed. “If there is a need in future, I would apprise the Chief Minister Kamal Nath who would be taking a call on the matter,” he said.
