NAAC ranks St Stephen’s College below many other Delhi colleges, Thampu attacks ‘activist’ teachers for lower grades

New Delhi: India’s much hyped and one of the premier educational institution St Stephen’s College has suffered yet another setback. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has downgraded the college, ranking it below even Gargi College of the same Delhi University.

According to NAAC officials St. Stephen’s College has been awarded A Grade with a CGPA of 3.21. It has been placed lower than the lesser known Gargi College with has CGPA of 3.3. Many Delhi colleges have got CGPA more than 3.5.

The controversial Principal of St. Stephen’s College, Valson Thampu, has lashed out at the ‘activist’ teachers of the college for this dismal performance. He has admitted that some ‘activist’ teachers of the college have ruined the reputation of the institution and the NAAC assessment is not unfair.

The NAAC team commented adversely on the fact that many of the teachers in several departments weren't doing enough. "The percentage of teachers with PhD was not up to the mark. Research publications weren't enough. Innovative initiatives were few and far between. They emphasised, quite rightly too that the potential of the college was regrettably underutilised," Thampu said in a Facebook post.

Thampu is retiring at the end of February 2016. St. Stephen’s College has been in the news mainly for the wrong reasons these days.
