BHUBANESWAR: Laxmi, the 34 year old blind female elephant of Nandankanan Zoological Park, died on Thursday. It had developed debility and was suffering from pneumonia too. The elephant was rescued from Madanpur Rampur Forest Range in Kalahandi district in 1977.
It had a gun shot injury in one eye and had gradually lost the other too. Though completely blind, Laxmi was so acquainted with the park that it had never lost way nor did it ever stumble, remembered a Zoo official fondly.

Dr SK Panda, head of pathology, Orissa College of Veterinary Sciences, said the elephant had digestion issues since its early days. It was weak and prone to diseases given its low resistance.
