BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday unveiled the State Wetland Atlas which was prepared jointly by the Orissa Space Application Centre and Space Applications Centre, ISRO, Ahmedabad. Releasing the atlas, Naveen said the information would help formulation of development policies of the State in  future besides aiding scholars in their research work. The atlas reveals that there are about 78,440 wetlands in the State out of which 66,174 are small in nature. The wetlands cover 6,90,904 hectare of the State while inland wetlands constitute about 66 per cent. Similarly, inland natural and man-made wetlands comprise 34 per cent and 32 per cent area under the wetlands. Of the 24 per cent of coastal wetlands, natural wetlands account for about 20 per cent while another 3 per cent are man-made. During the release of the atlas, Science and Technology Minister Usha Devi, Chief Secretary BK Patnaik and Deputy Director of Space Applications Centre, ISRO, Dr Jaysingh Parihar, ORSAC Chief Executive AK Mohapatra were present.
