Navratri Day 2: Goddess Brahmacharini
Maa Brahmacharini, worshipped on the second day of Navratri, represents the unmarried form of Goddess Parvati. She is depicted holding a Jap Mala and a Kamandal. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Brahmacharini performed severe penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband.
From spending 1,000 years on a diet of fruits and flowers to another 100 years on leafy vegetables, she followed a strict regime and stayed in open places in harsh weather. Maa Brahmacharini immolated herself, wishing for a father in her next birth who would respect Lord Shiva.
