NE outfit orders death to rapist rebel
An insurgent outfit in Manipur announced ‘capital punishment’ to a rebel who raped at gunpoint a girl and her mother-in-law.

Imphal: The alleged rape at gunpoint of a girl and her would-be mother-in-law by a rebel and some others in Manipur has incurred the wrath of an insurgent outfit, which has announced ‘capital punishment’ for one of the men involved in the crime.

The girl, after eloping with a man was going to her paternal house with his mother when they were allegedly raped by some militants on Sunday at Sekmaijin area in Imphal West district, official reports said on Wednesday.

The People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak), one of the state's most powerful insurgent groups, said in a statement that it would award ‘capital punishment’ to its cadre Laishram Herojit, who it said was involved in the rape.

Pointing out that Prepak respected women, the statement said Herojit had taken leave for some days and ‘committed the crime’ while returning to rejoin the unit.

Prepak asked three other men— N Awangba, L Bungcha and Th Doren, who were stated to be involved in the crime with Herojit — to surrender to it, failing which they would also be shot dead.

The Prepak statement, however, did not mention whether Awangba, Bungcha and Doren were members of the group. It also did not clarify whether Herojit was in its custody.

A joint action committee, formed by people of Sekmaijin to press for action against the rapists, demanded that the Prepak punish the culprits within 24 hours, a spokesman said.

Sekmaijin is inhabited by Meiteis and Meitei Muslims, and the rape victims belong to the latter community.PAGE_BREAK
