No Indian university has made it to the top 200 of the World University Rankings 2015-16, according to a study conducted by Times Higher Education.

No Indian university has made it to the top 200 of the World University Rankings 2015-16, according to a study conducted by Times Higher Education. However, 17 universities from the country have been named in the ranking comprising of 800 varsities from across the world.

Leading the list of Indian universities are the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B). The rankings reveal that IISc lies between 251 and 300 and IIT-B is ranked between 351 and 400.

Six more IITs – Delhi, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati, Kanpur and Roorkee – have made it to the top 600 universities in the world. Other Indian universities in the top 600 are Jadavpur University and Panjab University.

The Indian universities that featured in between the rank of 601 and 800 are Aligarh Muslim University, Amrita University, Andhra University, Birla Institutes of Technology and Sciences in Pilani, University of Calcutta, University of Delhi and Savitribai Phule Pune University.

While two universities from Pakistan - Quaid-i-azam University and National University of Sciences and Technology - made it to the top 800 global universities, as many as 36 from China appeared in the list. Two Chinese universities - Peking University and Tsinghua University - made it to top 50.

California Institute of Technology (Caltech) was adjudged the world’s number one university, followed by University of Oxford in second place and Stanford University in third place; university of cambridge appeared at the fourth place while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University were ranked fifth and sixth respectively.

The ranking is based on 13 performance indicators relevant to students such as faculty-student ratio, university’s global reputation, its total resources, international mix on campus, its links to business and research excellence.
