As we scroll down the long list of inevitable problems associated with going out for work, to shop or to hang out, parking your vehicle tops them all. “Currently, there are nearly four million vehicles on the roads of Bangalore city and around 1,000 more are added daily,” said N Sathyanarayan, the MD of Central Parking System (CPS) Pvt Ltd, a professional parking management company that was launched with their first project in Bangalore’s Forum Mall.“We are in negotiation with the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to sanction their unused land parcels in the city. If they want the land back, they can take it anytime they want,” said Sathyanarayan. He says they are also working on a stand off pay-and-park lot on Infantry Road. There is also another project that will soon take shape in the city. Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme, CPS is also working on five BMTC-TTMCs at Whitefield, Domlur, Kengeri, Yeshwantpur and Bidadi. The total investment for CPS at the TTMCs is over five crore. Travel and Transit Management Centres’ (TTMC) each complex will accommodate a bus depot at the basement and bus station on the ground floor with multi-level parking space. The TTMCs will have a capacity of an average of 150-400 cars. “The TTMC at Domlur is near completion,” said Sathyanarayan. CPS is also building parking lots at Phoenix Market City Mall at Whitefield and Vega City Mall, JP Nagar.Having been in the service for the last eight years, Satyanarayanan said the biggest challenge has always been that the size of a parking lot never fits the future need. Sathyanarayan said that vehicles can be stacked in myriad ways to accommodate maximum cars in minimum space. “A mechanical parking facility is available in Mantri Mall, where a car is kept over another. It is efficient and eco-friendly in the long run despite the huge investment. Another thought to cool the parking trouble is automatic parking where an autonomous car can manoeuvre from a traffic lane into a parking place to perform parallel parking, perpendicular or angle parking,” he noted. As to where Bangalore stands from the rest of the metro cities in terms of parking facilities, Sathyanarayanan explained, “Bangalore is fairly ahead in this development, though Delhi has the best infrastructure, owing to the central government’s attention.”
