BHUBANESWAR: The gruelling summer is not showing any sign of a let-up in Odisha yet. The mercury rose across the State on Wednesday and so did the death toll due to heatwave. With fresh deaths reported from Balasore, the heatwave has now claimed 10 lives. Balasore tops the list with three deaths. However, unofficial sunstroke death toll stood at 60. Jagatsinghpur has reported seven, followed by Bargarh, Sundargarh and Keonjhar with six deaths each. The day temperature rose appreciably on Wednesday over interior and western Odisha. The temperature was above normal (two to five degree Celsius more), over interior parts of Odisha. Dhenkanal reportedly saw the mercury reaching 47 degree Celsius. Titlagarh, Sambalpur and Balangir recorded 45.5 each. The weather office said the day temperature might go up further in the next few days. There is a strong north-westerly flow of wind because of a cloud mass near Myanmar region. This north-westerly wind, which is sweeping across western and central India, has heated up Odisha, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh. “This is a normal phenomenon before the monsoon current flows into Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea region,” the Met department said. The scorching conditions, though, are unlikely to change. The day temperature is likely to rise in some places though the pressure gradient over eastern and southern India could result in flow of sea breeze in the coastal areas. As a result, heatwave conditions may prevail over some parts of interior Odisha during the next 48 hours. It, however, also predicted thunder squalls in northern and coastal districts of Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Bhubaneswar, which recorded 40.2 and witnessed unprecedented humid conditions, may see the maximum temperature to hover around 41 on Thursday.
