BANGALORE: There are no safety walls around the construction site of the underpass at Tagore circle; though the work is on at snail’s pace for the past three years.Amid a public protest in 2008, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) gave the underpass project to PMJ constructions and Simplex private limited in July 2008. The company was given a deadline of 12 months. However, it is yet to complete the work and according to the Palike’s report submitted to JnNURM, only 58 per cent work has been completed. Meanwhile, the cost of the project has been increased to Rs 27 crore due to modification and delay. With no safety walls, the construction site is waiting-to-happen disaster, though smaller disasters have already been reported. Last September, a labourer was killed during an excavation work at the construction site. Three months back, a two wheeler rider fell into the pit, injuring his leg. According to a Basavanagudi Police Station police constable, the rider could not see the pit due to lack of light and with no safety wall to break his fall, he injured his leg. After the incident, the contractor tried to build safety-walls around the construction site, but it was more cosmetic in purpose with several sections still open.Mari Rajanna, retired government school teacher, told Express that since the construction started, residents of the area find the post office on K R road difficult to access. “It is difficult, especially for senior citizens and physically-challenged. Work is going on for the past four years and do not know when it will be completed. Till then, we have to bear with no choice,” he said.
