KOCHI: Ernakulam district had come out with flying colours in the SSLC results with 96.08 pass percentage. But a closer reading of figures in the sub-district levels reveals some disturbing facts regarding the performance of the schools in the Kochi city and its adjoining areas. In fact the Ernakulam educational sub-district, which includes the Kochi city has a pass percentage less than the state average.Meanwhile the other divisions in the bordering areas including the Aluva sub-division, the Kothamangalam sub-division and the Muvattupuzha sub-division seems to have fared much better than the schools that comes in the  city division. Kothamangalam, an educational sub-district with substantial sections of forest areas and pockets of land which does not have even basic infrastructure like roads has got the highest pass percentage in the district with as many as 98.4 per cent of students making the cut. Muvattupuzha too has similar results with 97.5 per cent of students passing the test. Aluva stands at 97.75 percentage meanwhile Ernakulam sub-district stands low scoring only 93.1 per cent, far below any of its counterparts in the district. The district shows a similar trend in terms of the number of schools having cent percentage pass results. Out of the 110 schools that have scored a hundred per cent, only 26 falls in Ernakulam while Aluva sub-division has got 42 schools scoring 100 per cent.  “Considering that Ernakulam sub-division has got more number of schools including many reputed schools, both the pass percentage and the number of schools having cent percentage result are a matter of concern. The Education department is planning to conduct an enquiry into the reasons for the dismal performance in the sub-district,” said M D Murali, Deputy Director of Education, Ernakulam District. The subjects where students in the sub-district fared badly are in Mathematics, Physics and in Social Sciences. “Earlier subjects like social sciences were not considered too difficult. But with the change in the syllabus and a well defined paper where students are expected to provide the correct points in their answers, the subject seems to have become more challenging,” he said.
