THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Inner Wheel Club of Thiruvananthapuram distributed packets of nutritional diet supplements to feeding mothers to mark the World Breast Feeding Week-2011. A kit containing packets of Complan, Mother’s Horlicks and other health supplements were made available to breast-feeding women in the maternity ward of the Peroorkada General Hospital. “The first lot of the packets were distributed on August 2 and as we had more of them supplied to us by the sponsors, we had a second round on August 4 as well,” said Radha Janardhanan, the club president, who gave away the kits to thankful new mothers who had few means to ensure a nutritional diet. Radha added that the packets were given to prenatal patients as well as it was important for pregnant women to take healthy food. “It will be useful for both the mother and the baby and will also help in ensuring that the baby gets enough breast milk after delivery.” The Inner Wheel Club is a sister club of Rotary International which took origin from the protest against non-admission of women to Rotaries and was formed as an organisation of the daughters and wives of Rotarians. Despite the Rotaries amending the laws to open membership to women, the proportion of women members still remain negligible and Inner Wheel clubs continue to exist parallel to the parent organisation in many countries. The Inner Wheel club of Thiruvananthapuram was founded in the year 1971 and meets once in a month to plan and organise acts of charity.
