Mumbai: A fire broke out in the basement of a building in central Mumbai on Friday due to a suspected electrical short circuit, fire service officials said.

Smoke billowed from the basement of Peninsula Chambers, in Peninsula Corporate Park in Lower Parel. Three firemen said there were no injuries as nobody was present in the basement when the fire broke out in the early hours, before office workers began arriving.

"The fire is under control," said a fireman, who declined to give his name as he was not authorised to talk to the media.

Police smashed glass windows and pumped in water to douse the fire while onlookers gathered on the sidewalks. The building houses offices of Bharti Airtel, advertising firm JWT and law firm Amarchand Mangaldas.
