KOCHI: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Tuesday exuded confidence that the Neyyattinkara bypoll, scheduled for June 2, would be a repeat of the Piravom byelection in which the UDF secured a landslide victory. “The UDF candidate R Selvaraj would win hands down,” he said. On the move by the Calicut University Syndicate to give away the land to the private trusts and agencies who had allegedly links with the Indian Union Muslim League, Chandy said that the state government has no intention of giving away a single inch of public land to anybody. Such a step is against the policy of the government and will be frozen, said Chandy. “The Syndicate has only powers to submit the recommendations to the government and does not have the authority to give away the land. The state government on the other hand is striving its best to conserve every bit of land given the instances of illegal land acquisition in the state,” Chandy said.On the Enrica Lexie case, Oommen Chandy stated that the state government will go ahead with its criminal case against the Italian marines in spite of the withdrawal of the petition by the kin of the deceased.
