THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Opposition staged walk outs twice in the Assembly on Wednesday.Opposition members stormed out in a huff in the morning after the Speaker refused to admit an adjournment motion on the dissolution of cooperative bank governing panels. An encore was in store for the evening as the day’s business was winding up. This time, the Opposition marched out demanding the suspension of cops who had questioned a 10-year-old victim of a molestation attempt in public. In the morning, CPM’s E P Jayarajan sought leave for the adjournment motion, alleging that the dissolution of the governing panels was a UDF ploy to take over the cooperative institutions. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy replied that the banks had violated NABARD guidelines which prompted the government decision. As accusations flew thick and fast, Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan said that the banks were registered not during the LDF tenure, but were already functioning during the previous UDF Government’s term. Countering it, Chandy said that one of the banks was registered only this year. With the Speaker refusing to admit the motion, the Opposition left the House shouting slogans. Opposition members again trooped out demanding the suspension of police officers who, earlier this month, questioned a 10-year-old victim of a molestation attempt in public at Kuttanad. They were not placated by the Chief Minister’s reply that the policemen had been transferred and further action would be taken pending investigation.FARE REVISIONThe State Government would rectify anomalies, if any, in the determination of fair stage rates under the new bus fares, Transport Minister V S Sivakumar said in a written reply in the Assembly. The fare revision has triggered 14.88 per cent rise in the revenue of the KSRTC. In September, the Corporation’s revenue jumped by `13 crore. The State Government has applied to the Centre to run the low-floor buses in other urban areas other than Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, the Minister said.ENFORCEMENT WINGThe Transport Commissioner has recommended that an enforcement wing be formed under the Motor Vehicles Department to tackle road accidents, Transport Minister V S Sivakumar said. The wing should be headed by an officer of the rank of Joint Commissioner, and should have four Regional Transport Officers, 17 Joint RTOs, 47 vehicle inspectors and 141 assistant motor vehicle inspectors, according to the recommendation.
