Over 97,000 litres of illicit liquor has been seized by teams of Excise and Income Tax departments in Uttar Pradesh since March 5 when the model code for the parliamentary elections came into force.

Over 97,000 litres of illicit liquor has been seized by teams of Excise and Income Tax departments in Uttar Pradesh since March 5 when the model code for the parliamentary elections came into force.

"After the announcement of Lok Sabha polls schedule, 97,642 litres of illicit liquor worth Rs 2.12 crore has been recovered by Excise and Income Tax department teams from across the state," UP Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha told reporters in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Besides, according to the Home Department, as many as 1,106 illegal firearms, 2,603 cartridges, 189 kg explosives and 106 country-made bombs have been seized. There have been allegations that political parties use muscle power and distribute liquor during elections to win over voters in their favour.
